Ethiopia’s State of Emergency Declaration in Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency to curb the spread of the Coronavirus within the country.

The announcement, made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday, comes after extensive consultations with opposition politicians.

“Considering the seriousness of the COVID-19, the government of Ethiopia has implemented a State of Emergency in accordance with Article 93 of the Constitution,” he stated.

“This decision is not just for the present generation but also for our children. It is not only about the impact on Ethiopia today, but also a decision that will impact us tomorrow,” he stressed.

The declaration came in response to a rapid increase in coronavirus cases, rising from 44 to 52 within a single day on Tuesday, April 7.

As of now, Ethiopia has recorded 52 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with two fatalities and four recoveries.
