Enugu Residents Participate in Sit-at-Home Protest

On Thursday, residents of Enugu State demonstrated their discontent with the current hardship and governance issues by participating in a sit-at-home protest.

Around the state capital, our reporter observed a significant slowdown in economic and social activities as streets were deserted.

Shops, petrol stations, malls, and event centers remained closed as of 10 am, with minimal activity in major markets like Ogbete Main Market, New Market, Abakpa Market, and Emene Market.

Security personnel were the primary presence at ShopRite and SPAR Market.

At Okpara Square, the entrance and surrounding roads were occupied by stern-looking soldiers and policemen.

Although the gate of Enugu State High Court was accessible, it was devoid of workers except for two security guards at the entrance. The Federal High Court gate, however, was securely locked.

One resident, Chinasa Omeke, attributed the situation in Enugu to the intimidating tactics of security agencies.

According to Omeke, “People are participating in the sit-at-home protest to avoid potential harm. The recent incidents in Enugu indicate that Nigerian security forces are suppressing citizens who exercise their constitutional right to protest.”

As of the report’s submission, only a few vehicles were spotted on the roads.
