Enhanced Security Measures Implemented in Prisons to Prevent Escapes

Ahead of potential nationwide protests, the Nigerian Correctional Service has increased surveillance by activating the K9, intelligence, and armed squads.

Following the October 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality, there were incidents of violence including attacks on correctional facilities and government buildings.

During these attacks, more than 2,000 inmates reportedly escaped from prisons in Edo and Ondo states.

In Edo State, under the guise of #EndSARS protesters, the Oko and Benin custodial centers were targeted resulting in the escape of 1,993 inmates; while in Ondo State, 58 inmates fled the Okitipupa custodial center.

NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, emphasized the collaborative efforts with other security agencies to safeguard all custodial centers nationwide in a recent interview.

Umar stated, “Various security strategies have been devised post the unfortunate incidents with enhanced security measures including the deployment of intelligence officers and activation of our K9 Department and armed squad.

“The CG has issued directives for collaboration with external security agencies to reinforce protection of all our custodial centers.

“Additionally, the interior task force established by the former minister has been reinvigorated, maintaining a high alert status to address any potential threats.”
