Empowering Youth Towards Ethical and Innovative Leadership

The recent leadership summit aimed at guiding Nigeria’s youth towards a new direction concluded with a strong emphasis on embracing ethical leadership, community involvement, and technological innovation.

According to a statement released on Thursday by Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Media and Publicity, the inaugural Lagos Leadership Summit, organized by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, brought together political figures, intellectuals, and a substantial virtual and in-person audience of young individuals. The summit’s theme, “Leadership and Nigeria’s Future,” sparked engaging discussions and conversations.

During his address, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighted the essential role that young people must fulfill. He expressed, “We firmly believe that young individuals are not just leaders of the future, but also leaders of today.” Sanwo-Olu credited his early appointment as a Special Adviser at the age of 37 for enhancing his problem-solving capabilities. He stressed the significance of character, competence, and vision in driving positive change.

Former Lagos Governor and ex-Minister, Babatunde Fashola, cautioned that unethical means no longer justify noble ends in governance. He stated, “The process is equally as important as the outcome. Leadership must pursue policies that serve the greater good, regardless of consequences.”

Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, voiced concern over the diminishing community engagement, which is crucial for social unity. He remarked, “Today, community engagement has weakened, and individualism has replaced the collectivist values ingrained in our society. Technology plays a vital role in fostering community connections and driving change swiftly.”

Minister of Communications, Bosun Tijani, urged participants to embrace the upcoming industrial revolution, as he believes the future of leadership will be heavily influenced by technological advancements.

Various other speakers, including the Minister of State for Youth, Ayodele Olawande, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Rinsola Abiola, shared their insights during the event. The need for leaders who are not only capable but also compassionate, visionary, and adaptable was stressed by LJLA Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, who added, “Effective leadership transcends mere words and must result in tangible impacts. We require leaders who instill confidence, promote unity, and drive meaningful change.”
