“Collaborating with UNESCO and Google on the global promotion of the CogLabs project is a tremendous honor for Infinix,” stated Michael Zeng, Brand Manager of Infinix Kenya. “This project focuses on building capabilities in crucial areas like robotics, machine learning, and AI, with an emphasis on educational equity to empower individuals and drive sustainable development.”

Simplifying AI and Robotics Education through the CogLabs Project

The CogLabs initiative introduces a pioneering educational approach to make the realms of AI and robotics accessible and interactive for today’s youth. Participants are guided through a step-by-step process where they can create their own robots using 3D printed components and a recycled phone, train the robots to identify images, sounds, and poses, and program them to execute simple tasks. Emphasizing sustainable design, CogLabs also offers code files, FAQs, and assistance to support users.

“The CogLabs initiative demonstrates how we can inspire and empower the next generation to embrace the transformative potentials of AI and robotics,” remarked Joan Nadal, Master Trainer of UNESCO at STEM Education. “Through partnerships with innovative entities like Infinix and Google, we equip young learners with the tools and resources to design, construct, and program their robotic innovations, fostering curiosity and imparting practical skills crucial for the digital era.”

Celebrating the Largest CogLabs Workshop and the Teaser of the Upcoming CogLabs Mobile App

The CogLabs workshop held at the esteemed University of Nairobi witnessed remarkable success, attracting esteemed guests and highlighting the institution’s dedication to advancing technology. This milestone event, the largest CogLabs workshop held thus far, engaged over 200 enthusiastic students, empowering them to learn new skills, apply their knowledge, and develop impactful solutions for the future.

Students at the workshop engaged in hands-on activities such as assembling their robots using 3D parts and repurposed Infinix smartphones. This innovative approach revitalized the devices, enabling students to train the robots to detect surrounding objects like arrows and react by moving left, right, or forward. This immersive experience provided participants with insights into coding, machine learning, and AI recognition processes.

“We are excited to introduce a preview of the CogLabs mobile application,” shared John Kimani, Head of Developer Relations, Sub-Saharan Africa, Google. “Google’s commitment to promoting digital literacy and enhancing accessibility to learning aligns seamlessly with the CogLabs mission. This app will empower everyone to delve into machine learning and programming, democratizing the creation of robotic wonders for all, irrespective of their access to laptops.”

Infinix Get In Now: Inspiring Africa’s Youth through AI Education

The CogLabs initiative underscores Infinix’s unwavering dedication to empowering today’s youth with cutting-edge technology and intelligent devices. Originating in Africa in 2013, Infinix strategically focuses on expanding this groundbreaking project across the continent.

Through extensive market research and collaborations with industry leaders and research institutions, Infinix tailors its products to meet the specific demands of local users in Africa. This meticulous attention to the African landscape positions the CogLabs project for transformative impact.

In advancing AI education in Africa, Infinix introduced voice interaction support for Hausa in 2020 and now offers support for major African languages. To enhance language capabilities, Infinix has set up specialized R&D centers dedicated to minor and regional languages across seven African nations, engaging over 120 linguists. Amber Zhao, Infinix’s Product Manager of AI, noted, “These centers are committed to developing localized AI language models that truly understand and cater to the diverse linguistic requirements of users across the continent.”

Starting from Kenya, Infinix plans to host a series of CogLabs workshops in various African countries, enabling students from primary to tertiary levels to partake in hands-on learning experiences. These workshops will integrate 3D printing, robot construction, and fundamental programming knowledge, empowering youth to explore advanced technologies.

“We strongly believe in the boundless potential of each young mind and we are confident that advanced technologies like AI will pave the way for a brighter future for all,” emphasized Michael Zeng, showcasing Infinix’s steadfast commitment to the project.

Embracing the event’s theme, “Get in Now: Inspiring Today’s Youth with AI Education,” the CogLabs initiative aims to ignite the creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills of young individuals across Africa. Infinix has pledged continuous support for the development of the CogLabs mobile application and will provide Infinix smartphones for student engagement in each workshop, ensuring a seamless and accessible learning experience.
