Emiliano Martinez: ‘Our destiny was to suffer’

Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper who delivered a remarkable performance leading his country to victory in the 2022 World Cup, has expressed his belief that his team was destined to endure hardships for the trophy.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper, who made a crucial save during the penalty shootout that followed extra time, described the match as highly complex.

In an interview with Television Publica, Martinez shared his thoughts, saying:

“We endured a lot. We felt in control but they managed to mount a comeback.

“It was an extremely challenging game. Our fate was to suffer. They had one final opportunity to clinch the win, and fortunately I was able to block it with my foot. It’s a moment I’ve always dreamed of experiencing, and I am at a loss for words. I left for England at a very young age, and I would like to dedicate this victory to my family.”
