Eleven hoodlums arrested by police amid violent protest in Niger

Following the outbreak of violence in the Tafa area of Kagarko LGA in Kaduna State and Hayin-Diko Gurara LGA in Niger State during the ongoing nationwide hunger protest, the Niger State Police Command has apprehended 11 hoodlums believed to be connected to the unrest.

Reports indicate that three youths lost their lives in Suleja LGA of Niger State as the protest escalated into violence in that area.

Tragically, the victims were reportedly attacked with stones, while more than 15 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at various healthcare facilities in Suleja and Gwagwalada in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In an official statement, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, revealed that the troublemakers gathered and attacked the Tafa LGA Secretariat situated along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Sabon-Wuse, early in the morning.

Abiodun detailed that the hoodlums not only set fire to the Tafa LGA Secretariat but also torched two vehicles and damaged two others.

“They proceeded to loot valuables on the premises, prompting the swift response of the Police and other security forces who intervened, arresting eleven violent troublemakers wielding various dangerous weapons, including firearms. Some other perpetrators were dispersed from the scene, and some of the stolen items were recovered,” he stated.

The police spokesperson disclosed that law enforcement swiftly responded to the blockade on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway and Old Toll-gate, dispersing the hoodlums and reopening the expressway for motorists, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic.

He also mentioned that an investigation into the violent incident has been initiated to apprehend any other troublemakers on the run.

“The Police Command reiterates its zero-tolerance stance towards violent protests, public asset destruction, and looting, warning the public, parents, and residents to advise their children accordingly. Any unlawful behavior will be met with strict legal consequences,” he emphasized.
