Edo State Government and Opposition Party Clash Over Federal Government Rice Distribution

A dispute has arisen between the Edo State Government and the opposition All Progressives Congress regarding the distribution of rice by the Federal Government to states as palliatives. This conflict has gained significant attention in Nigeria.

The distribution of truckloads of rice by the Federal Government to mitigate the effects of the economic challenges faced by Nigerians sparked controversy after a 10-day protest against governance issues and hunger. The focus shifted to the distribution of rice to Internally Displaced Persons and the needy in society.

In Edo State, where a gubernatorial election is scheduled for September 21, the opposition party criticized the state government for not disclosing information about the rice received from the Federal Government. This lack of transparency led to speculations and heightened tensions between the state government and the APC.

The opposition alleged that the rice provided by the FG was being repackaged and distributed by the state government under its own branding, especially through religious organizations. This accusation was met with denials and counterstatements from government officials.

Videos surfaced showing residents looting bags of rice from a trailer in Benin City, which further fueled the controversy. The APC accused the state government of diverting relief materials meant for the people, while the government refuted these claims, stating that relief efforts were conducted through religious bodies.

The conflicting narratives have left the residents of Edo State uncertain about the truth behind the rice distribution. As both sides continue to exchange accusations and denials, the controversy surrounding the Federal Government’s rice distribution persists.

Oshiomhole, the former governor, criticized Dangote’s donation of rice to the state, possibly due to ongoing criticism of the APC at the federal level amidst protests against bad governance.

He insinuated that there was an attempt to incite looting of the rice provided by residents. The Dangote Foundation distributes rice independently without involving the state government.

In a press conference, Nehikhare revealed that the state government received a few trucks of rice from the Federal Government. However, he emphasized that the rice allocation, though inadequate, was distributed according to specified criteria to various groups in need.

Edo State government clarified that they did not purchase rice but allocated funds to CAN for procuring essential food items, including rice, for vulnerable individuals as part of a deliberate policy.

Regarding the Federal Government’s rice donation, Nehikhare explained that the distribution was carried out as per the provided guidelines, reaching IDP camps, orphanages, and other designated beneficiaries without government interference.

A social commentator, Igbinobaro Odia, urged the state government to transparently announce the receipt and distribution details of the rice to prevent speculations that could erode public trust.

Odia noted the importance of timely provision of information to avoid politicization of such matters and to foster trust between the government and the citizens.

“The department responsible for updating on government activities should be proactive in preventing such issues in the future. Timely dissemination of information enhances trust between the government and the people.”
