Edo State Employs 5,500 Teachers

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s directive has led to the recruitment of 5,500 teachers by the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board.

Announced in Benin by Ozavize Salami, the Executive Chairman of Edo SUBEB, the recruitment is aimed at addressing teacher shortages and improving teaching and learning in schools in Edo.

Salami explained that the rigorous recruitment process ensured that the teachers will fill gaps in primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

A total of 19,931 applications were received for the teaching positions, with 16,038 candidates selected for computer-based tests and interviews.

Selected candidates, possessing the required skills and expertise, will be deployed across all local government areas of the state.

Salami emphasized that the recruitment of 5,500 personnel is part of the strategy to address teacher shortages in primary and junior secondary schools, showcasing Governor Obaseki’s commitment to providing quality education for the children of Edo State.

Many of the new teachers are young and dynamic, bringing a fresh perspective to the existing teaching staff. Governor Obaseki’s ongoing efforts aim to maintain Edo’s position as a leader in educational reform in Nigeria and beyond.

Over 70% of EdoSTAR fellows, who were initially trainee teachers two years ago, have now been recruited as full-time government teachers.

These fellows, who started on minimum wage, have seen a salary increase from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000 as of May 2024.

Among the 5,500 new recruits, 2,500 will be permanent government teachers, while the remaining 3,000 will fill EdoSTAR positions and begin a new three-year fellowship program.

In addition, 125 experienced education managers will be hired to support and sustain the EdoBEST program.

This recruitment is in line with Governor Obaseki’s objective of building on the program’s achievements and further enhancing learning outcomes for around 400,000 children in state-owned primary and junior secondary schools in Edo State.
