Edo government denies releasing photograph of fleeing COVID-19 patient, says the photo circulating is fake

The Edo State Government has refuted claims of releasing any photograph of the nursing mother who is wanted for fleeing after testing positive for COVID-19. Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, responded to a video on social media alleging false identification of the nursing mother who absconded after testing positive for COVID-19.

In his statement, Mr. Osagie addressed the circulation of a lady’s picture on social media, emphasizing that it is a case of fake news and undermining the government’s efforts. He clarified that the government had only disclosed the name and address of the woman, not released any photograph of her. He expressed sympathy for the lady in the video on social media, acknowledging her as a victim of fake news.

Furthermore, Mr. Osagie reiterated the warning against spreading fake news and misinformation, stating that such actions undermine the government’s efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus and are punishable under the Quarantine Act Regulations in force in the state. He urged the public to provide helpful information to aid in locating the COVID-19 patient and her baby, ensuring the safety of Edo people.
