Ede poly to revisit the expulsion of 27 students

An investigative committee has been established by the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State. This committee has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the expulsion of 27 students from the institution.

These students were recently expelled for their alleged involvement in violent protests on May 9, 2024. The protests ensued after some of their peers were apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, leading to property damage on campus.

During the demonstrations, a group of protesting students reportedly targeted the polytechnic’s Staff Club, resulting in the vandalism of several vehicles.

The council has stated that the recommendations put forth by the committee will determine whether the expelled students will be reinstated or not.

Following the first meeting of the newly formed governing council on Wednesday, the Chairman, Taiwo Olaiya, addressed the press. He clarified that the council has also prioritized addressing the pending promotions for the institution’s staff members.

Olaiya expressed, “Due to numerous appeals made regarding this matter, we have decided to invite the students to present their accounts of the events.

“A dedicated committee has been established, with a deadline of 48 hours for their report. Once we receive the committee’s findings, we will decide on the appropriate course of action.

“Furthermore, the council has committed to expediting the pending staff promotions and is committed to resolving issues impacting both students and staff.”

Olaiya emphasized the council’s aim to improve relations with the local community, stating, “Our goal is to cultivate a harmonious atmosphere within the polytechnic before our tenure concludes.”
