Ebonyi Government forms Committee for Peace in the Effium Crisis

Addressing the longstanding conflict in the Ezza-Effium region, Ebonyi State Government has taken a significant step by establishing a Peace Committee.

The primary objective is to execute the recommendations put forth in the government’s earlier White Paper.

Having commenced in 2021, the crisis spanning over three years has resulted in numerous casualties and destruction of properties worth billions of naira.

During a ceremony held at the Abakaliki Cabinet Office on Monday, Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, delegated the responsibility to inaugurate the Peace Committee to the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Grace Umezurike, who underlined the government’s dedication to resolving the intercommunity conflict.

Chaired by Ambassador Franklin Ogbuewu, the Committee includes Senator Sonni Ogbuoji as its Secretary and members from diverse backgrounds.

Emphasizing the importance of the Committee’s formation, Umezurike highlighted that “the committee’s objective is to put an end to the persistent Ezza-Effium/Effium crisis, which has been a major concern for the government.”

The Committee’s duties, as outlined by Governor Nwifuru, include disseminating the White Paper to the affected communities, implementing its provisions, mobilizing support for land surveying and demarcation, and conducting a comprehensive survey of the Effium land.

However, Umezurike cautioned against exceeding their mandate, clarifying that land demarcation falls within the jurisdiction of the Ebonyi State Government after the survey is completed.

Ensuring transparency and cooperation, she assured the Committee of providing all necessary documents for their tasks.

Expressing gratitude for the entrusted responsibility, the Committee Chairman thanked Governor Nwifuru and pledged unwavering commitment to their duties, recognizing the gravity of the task ahead.

Notable members of the Committee include Dr. Ben Uruchi Odo, Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice; Barrister Albert Alo, Solicitor General; Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam, Commissioner for Works; Dr. Matthew Nwobasi, Commissioner for Lands and Survey; Engr. Francis Ori, Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development; Mr. John Igbede, Surveyor General; Dr. Scamb Nwokolo, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ebonyi State Chapter; Rev. Fr. The establishment of the Peace Committee signifies a significant stride towards reconciliation and lasting peace in Ezza-Effium.
