DSS confirms Emefiele has been accused

The Department of State Services (DSS) has verified that Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been brought to court.

An Abuja High Court on Thursday, directed the DSS to either arraign Emefiele before a court or release him.

In a statement made by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the DSS stated that the service had applied for a court order to detain Emefiele in 2022 but acknowledged that he obtained another order to prevent the DSS from apprehending him.

Afunanya clarified that the suspended CBN governor was arrested for “criminal violations” and is currently facing prosecution.
The statement stated, “The Department of State Services hereby confirms that Mr. Godwin Emefiele has been brought to court in compliance with the Order.

“The public may recall that the Service had applied for a Court Order to detain him in connection with a criminal investigation in 2022. Despite obtaining a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the Service arrested him in June 2023. This was done based on suspected fresh criminal violations/information, one of which serves as the basis for his current prosecution.

“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling this matter and in the discharge of its duties within the boundaries of the law.”
