DSS arraigns Facebook user over post that ‘embarrassed’ Osun speaker, Timothy Owoeye

The Department of State Services, DSS, has arraigned a 48-year old man, Joshua Sayo, before an Osun State Magistrate Court for allegedly defaming Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Timothy Owoeye.

Sayo was brought to court over a Facebook post he allegedly made on June 19, 2020, in Osogbo. The DSS Prosecutor, Barr B.O Nweke, accused Sayo of publishing contemptuous pictures and words against the Osun State House of Assembly Speaker on a Facebook account “Sayo Oki.”

The prosecutor further stated that the accused had violated Section 374(1)b & 374 and could face punishment under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. 2 Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002. Sayo pleaded not guilty to the defamation allegation.

Meanwhile, the Defense Counsel, Ibraheem Imran, requested bail for the accused, which was granted by Magistrate Modupe Awodele. The bail was set at 100,000 Naira with 2 sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned till Tuesday, July 14, 2020, for further hearing.
