Donald Trump threatens Canada with a 100% tariff if it signs a trade deal with China

Donald Trump, president of the United States, has threatened Canada with a 100% tariff if it concludes a trade agreement with China.

The American president said on his social network, Truth Social, that if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “believes that he is going to turn Canada into an entry point for China to send goods and products to the United States, he is very wrong.”

“China will swallow Canada, devour it completely, including destroying its companies, its social fabric and its general lifestyle. If Canada signs an agreement with China, a 100% tariff will immediately be imposed on all Canadian goods and products entering the United States,” he added in his message.

This week, Trump stated at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland that “Canada exists because of the United States.”

For his part, Carney responded that Canadians are the “owners” at home and that their nation can be an example that the world does not have to give in to autocratic tendencies.
