Disorder in Nasarawa: Youths Involved in Hunger Protest Resort to Shop Looting and Highway Blocking

Recent events have unfolded as a group of demonstrators took to the Keffi-Abuja highway, causing a disruption in traffic flow along that route.

The protests, scheduled to span from August 1 to 10, 2024, are a call to action for the government to address critical challenges such as hunger, governance issues, and the exorbitant cost of living faced by Nigerians.

Initially hesitant to participate, the youth from Nasarawa eventually rallied in support of the protest, significantly increasing the number of participants.

In numbers reaching the thousands, the protesters resorted to setting fires on the roads and issuing threats to motorists who dared to continue through the blockade.

They carried various placards bearing messages like “End bad governance in Nigeria” and “Bring back fuel subsidy,” which underscored their dissatisfaction with the present administration.

The protest gained intense traction, particularly in the outskirts of Keffi, resulting in a complete standstill with both directions of the highway barricaded, effectively immobilizing vehicular traffic.

However, the demonstration in the Mararaba vicinity of Karu Local Government Area has devolved into instances of violence.

Reports from NewsNow indicate that there have been multiple incidents of shops being targeted for looting and arson along the express road.

The situation remains tensely poised as security forces strive to regain control and impose order.
