Diego Maradona Jr expressed his dismay at those who compare his father with Lionel Messi, stating that they do not comprehend football, especially after Argentina’s unexpected loss to Saudi Arabia.
Messi initially put Argentina in the lead during their World Cup opener with a penalty, but the underdogs managed to score two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half, shocking the favorites.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is participating in his fifth and final World Cup, which could be his last opportunity to secure victory, while Maradona famously led Argentina to triumph in Mexico in 1986.
According to a report by AS Sport, Maradona Jr asserted that his father and Messi do not belong to the same category.
He stated, “I am devastated by Argentina’s defeat. It’s difficult to believe that this actually happened. Losing to Saudi Arabia is unbelievable,” during an interview with Radio Marte in Italy.
He further commented, “The comparison between Messi and my dad is made by those who fail to comprehend football. We are discussing two different worlds. But I don’t want to immediately blame Lionel.”
Reflecting on Argentina’s unexpected loss, he concluded, “In football, there are instances where even significantly weaker opponents can secure victory. Today, I don’t think Argentina was overconfident. Rather, they were fearful. That’s how football is. If you fail to finish games, even the weakest teams will seize the opportunity.”
