Designated Locations for August 1 Protests Named by Governor Sanwo-Olu in Lagos

In an effort to prevent Thursday’s EndBadGovernance protest from being hijacked by hoodlums, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has made a commitment to ensure the safety of protesters. He mentioned that the state police command has identified Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park as the designated areas for the protests.

Emphasizing the need for security and order, Sanwo-Olu stated in a brief statement issued on Wednesday that these locations will be closely monitored to safeguard protesters and maintain peace.

Reflecting on the unfortunate events of the EndSARS protest in 2020, the Lagos State governor expressed his determination to avoid a repeat of the chaos and destruction that ensued during that time. He highlighted the significant damage caused to various important facilities such as the Lagos High Court, police stations, local government offices, fire stations, and the Forensic Centre.

Additional damages included the City Hall, Nigeria Ports Authority headquarters, and traditional rulers’ palaces. The widespread destruction of malls, shops, offices, and numerous brand-new BRT buses resulted in significant economic and social setbacks.

Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability for the prosperity of Lagos, urging unity, dialogue, and cooperation among citizens. He reiterated the importance of avoiding economic disruptions that could negatively impact the city’s growth.

To facilitate a safe and orderly expression of views, the Police have designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park as the official protest sites. These areas will be closely guarded to ensure the well-being of participants and prevent any potential disturbances.

Collaboratively working towards a safer, more secure, and prosperous Lagos is essential according to the governor. He emphasized the significance of unity and peace in shaping the city’s future and promoting its overall development.
