Youths from Anioma in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the alleged extra-judicial killing of their colleague identified as David Nduka, by a serving police officer in Abuja.
According to reports, Nduka, who worked for an Abuja security service located at the Gwarinpa area of the Federal Capital Territory was said to have kept the money given to share with his colleagues to himself.
His actions reportedly led to a fight with his colleagues, who attacked him.
Nduka ran to the nearby plaza, which housed a bank, seeking cover, but he was allegedly shot in the leg by one of the policemen stationed there.
Nduka was said to have bled profusely, leading to his death on June 21, 2024.
Youths, under the aegis of Anioma Youth Forum Worldwide, called on the IG to prosecute the policeman as they called for a thorough investigation of the matter, punishment for the policeman and adequate compensation for the grieving family.
The petition submitted to the Force Headquarters on Wednesday was signed by the National President of AYF-W, Nnamdi Ofonye, National Deputy President Nwachukwu Sadik Enemosa, National Secretary, Engr. Kabadi Kabadi and the Coordinator Abuja branch, Chijioke Isiekwene.
The petition read, “This senseless act of violence has shocked and saddened the membership of Anioma Youth Forum Worldwide and the entire Anioma community both in Abuja and back home in Delta State and we demand that a thorough investigation be conducted to hold the killer Police accountable for his actions.
“It is unacceptable for a supposedly trained police officer, entrusted with the simple duty of upholding the law and protecting the lives and properties to abuse such privilege and powers by heinously taking the life of an innocent individual in his prime.
“Nothing on earth can justify this. We urge you Sir to use your good office to take immediate action to bring the culprit to face the full wrath of the law to ensure that justice is served for David Nduka and his family”.
The group while calling for transparency in the investigation further demanded adequate punishment for the power-drunk officer and compensation for the family.
“While we call for transparency in the investigation process to unravel the motive behind the dastardly act coupled with adequate punishment as stipulated in our constitution, we also resolutely call for adequate compensation from the Nigerian Police to the family”.
When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, referred our correspondent to the FCT command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh.
Adeh told our correspondent that an investigation was ongoing on the matter.
She said, “The Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and it is ongoing.”
