David Umahi Criticizes Peter Obi, Asserts Igbo Leadership

In a recent statement, Minister of Works David Umahi expressed his disapproval of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, stating that Obi does not represent the Igbo community.

Umahi cautioned Obi against allegedly provoking the youth in the South-East to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s administration in anticipation of the upcoming August 1 protests.

During the Ebonyi State Youth and Stakeholders Summit at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki, Umahi made it clear that the governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo, and traditional rulers are the authoritative figures who speak on behalf of the Igbo people.

He emphasized, “Our governors and Ohaneze Ndigbo are the official representatives of the Igbo community. Let it be known that one individual’s remarks should not be used to tarnish our reputation. We are a peace-loving people who support Mr. President. I advise our colleague to reconsider his position to prevent inciting ill-informed youths and jeopardizing the nation’s peace.”

Umahi stated, “Protests are not effective. It is through constructive dialogue that grievances are addressed. President Bola Tinubu is actively working to resolve the concerns of the youth and the public.”

In his address to the youth and stakeholders, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State urged the state’s youth not to join the nationwide protests against hardships, assuring them that his administration is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Ebonyi.

Governor Nwifuru vowed to always listen to the youth of the state, ensuring that their needs and aspirations are met.

In support of President Bola Tinubu, the governor remarked, “Those who benefited most from the fuel subsidy are the ones opposing the interests of Nigerian youth. But with our backing, President Bola Tinubu will triumph over all adversaries.”

Other prominent figures in Ebonyi State who opposed the planned protests included former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former governor Chief Martin Elechi, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), traditional rulers, and representatives from student unions in the state.
