Cyber Attacks Surge Over 27 Million During 2023 Elections, States Galaxy Backbone

Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Ltd., revealed that the company successfully handled more than 27 million cyber attacks on its infrastructure during the 2023 General Elections.

Adeyanju shared this information during a courtesy visit from Malam Jibrin Baba-Ndace, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, in Abuja.

Emphasizing their leading security operation center, Adeyanju mentioned how they protect the government’s cyberspace.

Commenting on the election period, Adeyanju noted, “Even during the 2023 election result collation, we faced a staggering 27 million attacks in just one day.”

“Before the election day, we would typically face a maximum of 50,000 attacks. Experiencing nearly 30 million attacks in a single day was a significant escalation,” he added.

Despite the high volume of attacks, he reassured, “They did not succeed. Our security operation center was highly effective in thwarting cyber threats.”

Moreover, indicating spikes in attacks during recent protests, Adeyanju attributed their survival to the resilience of their operation center.

Galaxy Backbone’s chief highlighted the organization’s extensive network monitoring across various states in the country.

During his address, VON DG Ndace expressed his intent to enhance the collaboration between VON and Galaxy Backbone.

He sought assistance and skill development in ICT and cybersecurity for VON staff to improve fact-checking procedures, safeguard their cyberspace, and combat misinformation.
