COVID-19 cases may rise to 120, 000 by July – Lagos state govt predicts

According to the Lagos state government, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state is predicted to rise to 120,000 by July 2020. The state Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, revealed this information during a press conference on May 8.

He attributed the recent increase in cases to the decentralization of sample collections to the 20 local governments, indicating that the proactive measures put in place by the government have helped prevent a worse scenario. Akin Abayomi mentioned that areas such as Alimosho, Oshodi, and Isolo in the state have observed a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Despite the rise in cases, the commissioner noted that 97% of positive cases at isolation centers were mild or moderate, with only 3% categorized as severe. Additionally, he disclosed that the state government is planning to commence hydroxychloroquine trials within the next week.
