Coronavirus: Nigerian Medical Association orders striking doctors back to work

The Nigerian Medical Association has issued a directive for striking doctors to promptly resume their duties and contribute to the efforts to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

The President of the association, Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile, conveyed this message during a press briefing in Abuja, where he urged all medical associations engaged in industrial actions against their management to halt their activities. Instead, he indicated that the National NMA would take charge of the disputes and engage with different government bodies.

“We direct all medical associations that have declared industrial actions against their management to suspend all actions as the National NMA shall take over the dispute and interact with the different organs and agencies of the government. In this regard, the Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna and also in Gombe state as well as NMA in Cross Rivers state are to report back to work and treat Nigerians,” he stated.

The strike actions were initiated by the Association of Resident Doctors in Abuja, Gombe, and Kaduna states in protest of unpaid allowances and salaries. Additionally, members of the NMA in Cross Rivers state had also participated in a strike in March due to concerns about the state’s security situation.
