Coronavirus Lockdown: Lagos mortuaries now full and need urgent decongestion — Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated during a press briefing on Saturday April 25 that there is an urgent need to decongest mortuaries in Lagos as they are now full. The Governor clarified that the full mortuaries are not a result of Coronavirus cases, but rather due to the inability of residents to hold burial ceremonies for their loved ones because of the lockdown order.

Sanwo-Olu outlined new measures to ensure the decongestion of mortuaries in the state and made an appeal to Lagosians to schedule funerals for their loved ones. He emphasized that the full mortuaries are not a result of Covid-19 deaths and urged residents to adhere to specific requirements if they choose to hold or attend funeral ceremonies in the state.

The requirements for funeral ceremonies in Lagos include limiting the number of attendees to 20, maintaining physical distancing, wearing masks, and ensuring hand hygiene. The Governor also warned that if there is no decongestion of the mortuaries in the next two weeks, the Lagos State Government may be forced to carry out mass burials. He appealed for cooperation from the residents to avoid such a scenario.
