The shutdown of a Chinese supermarket in Abuja due to products with bizarre expiry dates has been a matter of concern. The Panda supermarket in Jabi, Abuja, reportedly engaged in the illegal sale of imported seafood and animals from China.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) took action to close down the supermarket as a precautionary measure against the potential risk of the coronavirus outbreak.

During the inspection, it was revealed that the supermarket had discriminated against certain nationalities and was found to have an undisclosed section specifically for Asian nationals. Furthermore, the discovery of illegally imported seafood and animals from China resulted in the closure of the store.

In addition to these findings, a range of products with expiration dates set in the distant future, including 2089, 2073, 2037, 2018, and 2019, were also uncovered at the supermarket.

The FCCPC shared details of the closure and ongoing regulatory activities in a series of tweets addressing the situation, confirming the discovery of expired and irregular shelf-life products.
