Condolences for Iwuanyanwu: Ohanaeze Ndigbo Opens Register, Skips Igbo Day

An opportunity to offer condolences has been provided by the National Executive Council of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide following the passing of its late President, General Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Iwuanyanwu, who served as the 11th President-General from April 30, 2023, after his predecessor George Obiozor’s death in December 2022, passed away at the age of 82.

In a recent emergency meeting at the organization’s national secretariat in Enugu, Secretary General Okey Emuchay expressed sorrow over Iwuanyanwu’s passing, noting the unfortunate timing less than two years after the loss of Obiozor.

The news of Iwuanyanwu’s passing was confirmed by his son, Jide, in a statement on July 25, revealing that he passed away in Abuja after a brief illness.

Emuchay described Iwuanyanwu as a unique individual with fantastic ideas and visions for the Igbo nation and Nigeria, stating that a central burial committee will soon be established.

He announced that in respect and honor of the departed President-General, all activities including the Igbo Day Celebration for 2024, scheduled originally for September 29, in Imo State, will be skipped.

Reassuring that Ohanaeze is in capable hands, Emuchay declared, “As a collective NEC, we are committed to continuing the work from where he left off.”

He encouraged all state Secretariats of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and chapters in Nigeria and the diaspora to open condolence books for individuals to express their thoughts and prayers for the late President-General.
