Concerns Over WhatsApp’s Operations in Nigeria Emerge Following $220 Million Fine

Following the imposition of a $220 million fine by Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for a data privacy violation, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is deliberating on potentially halting its services in the country due to additional regulatory requirements.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is considering scaling back certain operations in Nigeria.

In addition to the substantial penalty, the FCCPC has mandated WhatsApp to stop sharing user data with other Facebook entities and third parties without explicit user consent. The commission has also called for WhatsApp to disclose information regarding its data collection practices and enhance user control over data usage.
