Concerns over Health Lead to Closure of Gwange Muslim and Old GRA Christian Cemeteries in Borno State

The authorities in Borno State have taken the decision to close down the Gwange Muslim and Old GRA Christian cemeteries in Maiduguri, the state’s capital, starting from Sunday, 1st September, 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mohammed Lawan Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, announced the closure of these burial grounds.

The action was prompted by overcrowding at the cemeteries and the associated health risks to the local community.

As an alternative, the state government has designated the Dalori Cemetery on Bama Road for the Muslim community and the Maximum Security Christian Cemetery off Baga Road for the Christian community.

Ensuring the expansion of burial sites in line with the Government Development Plan is a priority for the Borno State Government.

In addressing public concerns, the government promises adequate and timely measures to cater to the growing needs of the community.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has procured six vehicles to facilitate the transportation of deceased individuals to the designated graveyards.
