Concerns over Finidi’s Departure and Prospects for Improved Coaching

The recent resignation of Finidi George, the former Vice Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, has been perceived as a positive development.

In response, Ologbese highlighted that this resignation could open doors for a more seasoned tactician to assume the role.

Expressing concerns, Ologbese mentioned, “It is essential for Nigeria to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, and the current situation necessitates a change in leadership.”

Notably, Finidi George faced severe criticism following a series of poor performances in the World Cup qualification matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Under Finidi’s leadership, the Super Eagles achieved a 1-1 draw against South Africa and suffered a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic, leaving them with 3 points and positioned fifth in the group.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has indicated its intention to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the upcoming weeks, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.

Commenting on the situation, Ologbese criticized the NFF’s handling of the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification prospects with the appointment of Finidi.

“The resignation of the current coach presents an opportunity to bring in a more qualified tactician who can guide the Super Eagles to the next World Cup,” remarked Ologbese.

“It would be detrimental to Nigeria’s football reputation in Africa to miss out on the World Cup for the second consecutive time.

“The Super Eagles require a skilled coach at this juncture who can effectively lead the team in the remaining six matches in group C.

“With the resignation of the coach, the responsibility now lies with the top football authority and the sports ministry to take necessary actions,” he emphasized.

According to Ologbese, Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup eliminates any excuses for missing out on the next edition.

“Both the sports ministry and NFF must make every effort to ensure that the Super Eagles emerge victorious in all of their remaining six matches.

“A versatile and highly experienced coach familiar with Nigeria’s football landscape should lead the Super Eagles,” recommended Ologbese.
