Compromised Elections: The Culprit Behind Democracy’s Demise in Africa, Says Shehu Sani

Commenting on the collapse of democracy in Africa, former Senator and social analyst, Shehu Sani, asserts that compromised elections are to blame.

In a recent post on his now-defunct Twitter handle, Sani sheds light on the increasing number of coup attempts in Africa.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, high-ranking military officials declared a coup in Gabon, following President Ali Bongo’s controversial third term re-election.

The officers announced the nullification of the election outcome, which had been rejected by the opposition, citing fraud.

Sani lays the blame for the destruction of democracy in Gabon squarely on the Bongo family, accusing them of exerting undue influence.

He states, “A BBC correspondent has reported that people are genuinely coming out in support of the coup in Libreville, Gabon. The Bongo family has monopolized and decimated democracy. Democracy in Africa perishes when elections are tainted.”
