Community in Ondo expresses concern over increasing hoodlum attacks

The residents of Ìrele community in the Ìrele Local Government Area of Ondo State are alarmed by the growing number of attacks on their community. These attacks have resulted in residents sustaining various injuries and the destruction of farmlands by suspected hoodlums.

Speaking to PUNCH Metro in separate phone interviews on Thursday, some residents expressed fear over the frequent attacks on the community, forcing many to relocate to safer areas.

The Irele community was previously part of the Ikale Local Government Area with Okitipupa as its headquarters. However, in 1991, the Federal Government’s creation of more local governments led to the establishment of Irele Local Government with Irele as the new headquarters.

Several videos showing the aftermath of the attacks were shared with our correspondent, depicting burnt properties like houses and motorcycles allegedly set ablaze by the hoodlums.

Additionally, our correspondent noted the destruction of what appeared to be plantain plantations and the wooden canoes used by residents for transportation to nearby communities.

Mr. Fashadeju Wokan, a resident, expressed frustration over the lack of action from the police despite multiple reports of bandit attacks. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to address the ongoing security threats.

Describing the impact of the recent attacks in March 2024, Wokan highlighted the significant challenges faced by residents, many of whom had to seek refuge in Irele Township for safety.

Chief Samuel Akinduyigbe, the Baale of Eyinrowo, stressed the urgency of government intervention to halt the attacks that were disrupting farming activities and instilling fear among residents.

Chief Tola Omogunwa, the Igbeleju of Irele, echoed similar concerns, noting the community’s vulnerability since the commencement of the attacks that have forced residents to abandon their farms.

In response to the community’s grievances, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ibukun Odunlami, urged residents to report any perceived inaction by the police division to the area command for proper investigation.
