Commissioner labels attack on Oyo secretariat as treasonable felony

In an interview with AJIBADE OMAPE, the Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism in Oyo state, Dotun Oyelade, shares insights on the recent assault on the state secretariat by Yoruba nation agitators.

What might have incited the recent attack on the Oyo state secretariat?

Our perception is that apart from the misguided nature of the protest, the triggering factor could be an individual with persuasive skills and financial resources. This hasty action reflects the influence of such an individual. Prompt action was taken by the government in response, with suspects arraigned just two days after the incident. This illustrates our government’s proactive stance. While caught off guard initially, we swiftly acted from the moment it occurred on Saturday.

How does the government intend to handle the grievances of the Yoruba nation agitators while upholding law and order?

Fundamentally, the government acknowledges the prevailing hardship faced by many in Nigeria. The agitation is directed at the national structure rather than individual state governments. Resolving the underlying societal issues could potentially minimize such unrest.

Our government respects the right to dissent but emphasizes that it must be done lawfully. Any resort to violence or armed confrontation cannot be condoned. Legal measures, within the framework of the constitution, will be applied decisively to address such actions, including those behind the agitation.

You mentioned that the number of arrests now stands at 29. Is there an ongoing effort to apprehend more individuals involved?

The updated figure of arrested individuals is now 29, all of whom were arraigned on April 17th. The administration remains steadfast in adhering to legal processes without sensationalism. There will be no compromise on addressing this matter with the full extent of the law.

Reports indicated that a substantial cache of firearms was found in the possession of the agitators. What are your thoughts on such weaponry being brought to the state secretariat?

The Commissioner of Police categorically deemed this a case of treasonable felony and terrorism. Their act of bringing weapons to the state secretariat is unacceptable. The government sees this as a grave offense reflecting a misguided attempt to make a statement. Any form of agitation should be within legal boundaries, and resorting to arms is unacceptable.

Is the emerging trend of agitation a concern for the state government, given recent incidents?

While acknowledging grievances, the government does not view this incident as a recurring pattern. Immediate legal actions were taken, with 29 individuals arraigned. The incident is being handled diligently, with the suspects in custody awaiting trial.

How do you assess the security situation in Oyo State and the collaboration between security agencies and communities in maintaining peace?

Recent statements from security officials attest to Oyo State being one of the safest in the country. The collaborative efforts between security agencies like Amotekun Corps, Operation Burst, and the police have been productive, ensuring a secure environment for residents.
