Commissioner Emphasizes Adherents’ Right to Drink from Sacred River at Osun-Osogbo Festival

In a recent statement, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism in Osun State, Abiodun Ojo, emphasized that no one has the authority to prevent followers of the Osun deity from consuming water from the Osun River.

Ojo emphasized the need for the government to ensure the cleanliness of the river to maintain its purity for human use.

These remarks were made during a press conference held as part of the Osun-Osogbo Festival celebrations in Osogbo.

Highlighting the significance of the Osun-Osogbo sacred grove as a UNESCO Category II Heritage Site, Ojo praised the natural vegetation in the area, noting its medical and economic benefits for the community.

He mentioned, “It is not within anyone’s power to prevent Osun adherents from using the river water, but the government’s responsibility is to safeguard the cleanliness and safety of the water for public consumption.

“Osogbo boasts the most natural grove and vegetation in Nigeria, providing both medical and economic advantages.

“The Osun-Osogbo grove maintains a 70% natural state, free from pollution and preserving its natural habitat,” he added.

Earlier during the event, the Ataoja of Osogbo land, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, spoke about the miraculous effects of consuming water from the Osun River for adherents and visitors alike, likening the Festival to a pilgrimage due to the miracles witnessed by the faithful.

“Consuming water from the Osun River has been associated with miracles for individuals.

“The Festival is akin to a pilgrimage due to the numerous miracles experienced by those who have faith in the water,” Oba Oyetunji stated.

The monarch also mentioned that a chemical analysis of the river water confirmed its purity without any impurities, acids, or bases, underscoring its significance for drinking and other purposes.

“The Osun River has been scientifically tested, revealing its pure state devoid of acidic or basic elements.

“This river serves multiple functions such as drinking water and construction material, making the Osun-Osogbo Festival a remarkable event where everyone benefits,” the monarch concluded.
