Citizens’ Security Should Be Ensured During Nationwide Protest, Urges Group to Nigerian Govt

A plea has been made by the Voice of Women in Nigeria Leadership Initiative, a civil society group, to the government to prioritize the security and protection of all citizens, particularly those planning to partake in the upcoming nationwide protest.

The group stressed the importance of preventing a reoccurrence of the unfortunate events that transpired during the #EndSARS protest, emphasizing the loss of lives and the lack of government accountability.

Addressing journalists in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, the President of the group, Hajiya Halima Tijjani, conveyed the message through a press release.

According to the statement: “Given the current economic challenges and the rising discontent among our populace, it is crucial to acknowledge the urgent issues and the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

“The Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and protest.

“This fundamental right is foundational to our democracy, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard, especially in times of crisis.

“Today, our nation is grappling with a severe economic recession, marked by widespread hunger and hardship impacting numerous families. The cries of the masses cannot, and should not, be disregarded.

“As an organization dedicated to enhancing economic development, promoting community involvement, and mobilizing volunteer assistance to create tangible effects nationwide, we wholeheartedly endorse the right of Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests”, she affirmed.

“It is their constitutional entitlement to voice their grievances and demand accountability from the government; peaceful protest is a legitimate form of expression and a crucial tool for citizens to engage in governance and advocate for change.

“The government must acknowledge and uphold the people’s constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest. Any efforts to suppress this right undermine democratic principles and challenge the rule of law.

“The government should ensure the safety and security of all citizens, including those engaging in peaceful protests, and any recreation of the regrettable incidents during the END SARS protest, where mothers lost their children without government accountability, should be strongly discouraged.

“We call upon the security forces to demonstrate restraint, professionalism, and respect for human rights, ensuring the well-being of all protesters.

“We stand in solidarity with the people in their rightful demand for good governance, transparency, and accountability.

“It is not too late for the government to heed the people’s call and take decisive measures to tackle the critical issues facing our nation.”
