Children under six cannot be taken away from mothers

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, has revealed that children under six years cannot be separated from their mothers.

This clarification comes amid concerns about fathers and their families forcefully taking children away from mothers.

According to Edafe, the law states that in cases of separation or divorce, children under six will remain with their mothers, except in cases of mental illness

He made this known in a post on X.com on Thursday.

He wrote, “Mothers should know their rights. A child below the age of six cannot be taken away from the mother.

“Custody of the child must always be with the mother in cases where the father and the mother are no longer together, except in cases of mental illness.

“Fathers and families of fathers tend to oppress women and mothers and forcefully take the children away from the mother. This is so wrong.

“If you are a victim, the police can be your voice. Though child custody lies in the hands of the court, the law still says below the age of six, and the mother should be with the child. Know your right.”
