Charly Boy: Remembering My Father, the Socrates of Nigerian Supreme Court

Renowned singer Charles Oputa, famously known as Charly Boy, has paid tribute to his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, by likening him to the Socrates of the Nigerian Supreme Court.

Reflecting on the 10th anniversary of Justice Oputa’s passing, Charly Boy shared memories of his father and their unique relationship.

Charly Boy fondly remembered how he felt like he was competing with his father in his early days.

On a platform, Charly Boy expressed, “A decade has gone by since the Socrates of the Nigerian Supreme Court left us.

“He was a remarkable man, a pillar of unity in our family.

“Here’s to a father who had the courage to raise a son like Charlyboy.

“As a patriarch, he was exceptional. He governed his family with love and wisdom. On the judicial bench, he was akin to Socrates, revered by his peers. His judgments were profound and thought-provoking.

“At the outset of my journey as ‘Charlyboy,’ little did I realize I was inadvertently in a friendly competition with my own father.

“Many continuously reminded me of his exceptional nature, almost as if I had to strive to match it.

“I imbibed from him values of family unity, simplicity, contentment, and humility.

“Today, we honor your memory and all that you symbolized. Rest in eternal peace, dear father. Thank you for believing in my aspirations.”
