Chaos on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Travelers Stranded and Fares Hiked

On Sunday, motorists leaving Lagos State found themselves in a difficult situation as they encountered severe delays due to an overloaded truck blocking the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident led to a massive traffic jam, stretching from the pedestrian bridge at Berger Bus Stop all the way to just in front of the Tribune House along the route.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing stranded passengers getting off their vehicles and walking to bypass the blocked section of the expressway.

Reports from PUNCH Metro indicated that fare prices from Berger Bus Stop to Mowe, Ibafo, and Arepo had skyrocketed from the usual N400 to N1000.

Efforts were made by FRSC officials to clear the fallen truck and restore traffic flow. However, stranded commuters shared their frustrations, with one individual named Dozie mentioning being stuck in the same spot for at least two hours.

Confirming the incident, Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, attributed the accident to overloading and a mechanical issue.

She explained, “The vehicle that had a mechanical problem was overloaded, causing it to topple. Without the overload, the accident could have been avoided. Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties reported.”
