The ranking of Kano State as the lowest performing state in Nigeria by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights

The Center for Democracy and Human Rights, CEDEHUR, has placed Kano State at the bottom of the list as the “worst-governed and least-performing” state since the new administration assumed office in May 2023.

Presenting its quarterly report on governance across the 18 states with new governors in Abuja, the Center announced its findings on Tuesday.

In evaluating the states, the Center considered factors such as transparency, accountability, quality of appointees, and the impact of policies on the citizens.

At a press briefing in Abuja, Amb. Adebayo Lion Ogorry, representing the Center, criticized Kano State for its governance faults, highlighting the administration’s focus on political structures to the detriment of the populace.

“Kano stands out as one of the states where the Governor has fallen short on multiple fronts.

“Statistics show that the State is caught up in a series of political engagements that have undermined effective governance.

“Feedback from stakeholders in the state reveals that the Governor lacks effective strategies to address the socio-economic challenges facing the state.

“Moreover, it was noted that his selection of political appointees was influenced by political motives rather than merit and competence,” added Ogorry.
