Caution from Ekiti State Government against Street Trading

Market vendors in Ekiti State have been warned against the act of showcasing their goods on the streets, notably in Ado Ekiti, the capital of the state.

Expressing his concern in Ado-Ekiti, the Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, labeled illegal street trading as hazardous and detrimental, mentioning that displaying merchandise on the roads hampers the smooth flow of traffic.

He further highlighted that this practice exacerbates waste management issues and could potentially lead to unfortunate accidents resulting in loss of lives and property.

As per Olatunbosun, “Street trading poses a significant challenge as it contributes to traffic congestion, waste mismanagement, cutthroat competition for customers, and accidents.”

“The environmental debris left behind by street traders obstructs drainage systems, leading to flooding when it rains and causing road deterioration. Most street traders tend to litter the environment without actively participating in its cleanliness,” he added.

Olatunbosun mentioned that the state government has constructed multiple markets in the Ado Ekiti metropolis, emphasizing that these markets are equipped with proper sanitation facilities, well-established access roads, and adequate security measures.

He encouraged traders to seize the opportunity provided by the government to relocate from hazardous street locations to more favorable environments designated to improve their commerce and elevate their economic standing.

The government’s spokesperson cautioned that environmental officials would make regular visits to the markets to ensure adherence to regulations and proper sanitation, warning that violators would be held accountable in accordance with the state’s environmental laws.
