Capital Punishment for Lagos Vulcaniser Convicted of Stealing N57,000 from Nurse

Lagos vulcaniser sentenced to death by hanging for stealing N57,000 from nurse

A nurse was robbed of N57,000 at Akesan bus stop, near Igando, Lagos, leading to the sentencing of a 32-year-old vulcaniser to death by hanging.

Chidozie Onyinchiz was handed the sentence by Justice Mojisola Dada at the Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday, Jan. 17 following the proof of three charges against him – conspiracy, armed robbery, and membership of an unlawful society.

The convict’s attempt to deny the charges was dismissed by Justice Dada who highlighted the victim’s identification of him without a mask during the robbery. His confession and the circumstances of the case further supported the guilty verdict.

“The totality of the evidence before the court is compelling and I find the defendant guilty of the charges preferred against him,” Justice Dada stated, pronouncing the death sentence.

Mrs Afolake Onayinka, the state prosecutor, informed the court that the convict, along with an accomplice still at large, committed the offences on Aug.12, 2018. The timely intervention of a white garment church shepherd led to Onyinchiz’s arrest while his accomplice managed to escape.
