Buhari nominates Okonjo-Iweala as Nigeria’s candidate for World Trade Organisation’s DG election

The announcement of the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Nigeria’s candidate for the upcoming 2021 World Trade Organization (WTO) election for Director-General was made by President Buhari. This decision came as the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah was withdrawn by Nigeria. President Buhari urged for support for Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy during the elections. The withdrawal of Agah’s candidature was communicated through a diplomatic note sent by the Nigerian Embassy and Permanent Mission to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mr Agah, who currently holds the position of one of the four deputy directors-general of the WTO, has been appointed for two terms, and his tenure ends on October 1, 2021.
