BSU: ASUU vows to continue strike

The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at Benue State University remains in place as the university management has not met the union’s demands. Dr. Kwaghfan Tarnongo, the Chairman of ASUU-BSU, revealed this during a discussion with reporters in his office in Makurdi. He emphasized that the university management has failed to address the demands of ASUU. Tarnongo also clarified that the Benue State Government is not at fault, as it provides approximately N70 million monthly to fulfill the union’s requests. He expressed bewilderment at the university management’s refusal to do so. Among ASUU’s demands are incremental arrears, promotion, and earned academic arrears. Tarnongo highlighted that the BSU management owes 44 months of academic allowances to old staff and 23 months to new staff. He expressed concern for the students but justified the strike as necessary to press for their demands. In response to journalists’ inquiries, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Tor Iorapuu, declined to comment, indicating the State Government’s involvement in the matter.
