Breaking News: Tobi Amusan Makes History with New African Indoor Record in 60m Hurdles

At the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on Sunday, Feb. 4, Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan shattered the African women’s indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles.

Amusan achieved this feat by clocking 7.75 seconds, surpassing her own previous mark of 7.77 seconds established in Kazakhstan in January.

Despite this remarkable accomplishment, her time was not enough to clinch first place in Boston, with Amusan finishing second to America’s Tia Jones, who completed the race in 7.72 seconds.

In third place close behind Amusan was Bahama’s Devynne Chalton, finishing in 7.76 seconds.

Prior to this event, on January 27, Amusan had already broken the African record set by her compatriot Gloria Alozie in her first race of the new athletic season.

Additionally, Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili also showcased her talent in the women’s 300 meters, securing second place with a time of 35.99 seconds.

Ofili was second to Gabby Thomas from the US, who ran an impressive world-leading time of 35.75 seconds to claim victory in the race.

Lynna Irby-Jackson, another US athlete, secured third place with a time of 36.05 seconds.

Ofili currently holds the African indoor record in the women’s 200 meters, a record she set in March 2023.
