Borno State Governor reveals majority of protesters below 14 years old

Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has stated that 95% of the participants in the recent violent protests in Maiduguri were children under the age of 14.

Zulum disclosed this information in a public address to the people of Borno, during which he also announced the lifting of the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state.

He expressed concern, saying, “The children, most of whom are under 14 years old, do not fully comprehend the reasons behind their participation in the protests.”

Highlighting the issue, the governor mentioned, “It is surprising to see a six-year-old child holding a protest placard; clearly, they are being influenced by others. Many of these children are not even from Borno.”

Addressing the need to address the situation of Almajiri children in Maiduguri, without proper supervision, Zulum emphasized the importance of ensuring that these children are taken care of by responsible individuals.

He condemned the violent actions of troublemakers who exploited the protests in Maiduguri, leading to the destruction and looting of public property, including hospitals.

Zulum commended the efforts of security forces in preventing potential attacks on critical infrastructure such as the Maiduguri Emergency Power Gas Plant.

Asserting his stance against violence, he urged citizens to refrain from engaging in any form of aggression or unrest.

With the curfew lifted, the governor warned that stringent measures would be taken against anyone involved in criminal activities like looting and violence.

Zulum reiterated his administration’s dedication to improving the state, highlighting ongoing initiatives in various sectors like infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
