Boosting Agriculture in Badagry: MHR Sesi Whingan Distributes 384 Bags of Fertilizers

On July 28, 2024, Hon. Sesi Whingan, the Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, took a significant step towards enhancing agricultural productivity by distributing 384 bags of fertilizer to local farmers. The aim of this initiative is to improve crop yields and provide support to the agricultural community in the region.

The distribution event drew a large number of farmers from the Badagry Local Government, Olorunda, and Badagry West Local Council Development Areas, all eagerly waiting to receive the much-needed agricultural inputs. This effort highlights Hon. Whingan’s deep understanding of his constituents’ needs, particularly in a time when Nigeria is striving for food security nationwide.

Hon. Sesi Whingan successfully advocated with the Federal Government to secure tons of free fertilizer for Badagry farmers. The consignment arrived at his constituency office a few days before the distribution.

During his address, conveyed by Hon. Wale Adesina, the coordinator of the Sesi Whingan Foundation, Hon. Whingan stressed the importance of supporting local farmers, emphasizing agriculture as a crucial sector for the community’s economic growth. He reaffirmed his dedication to providing ongoing support and resources to enhance agricultural productivity in Badagry.

Grateful farmers who benefited expressed their appreciation, acknowledging that the fertilizer would significantly increase their crop production. Many had been struggling with the high costs of agricultural inputs, making this assistance a timely intervention.

Last week, the office of the MHR for Badagry announced plans for the fertilizer distribution to local farmers. Registration forms were distributed for screening to ensure that the beneficiaries were active farmers. The selection process was carefully monitored by prominent local farmer leaders, including Alhaji Oyelekan Muftau Abiodun, President of the Farmers Association in Badagry Central, and his colleagues from Olorunda and Badagry West Local Council Development Areas (LCDA). Mr. Afeez Olumide Garuba, Chairman of the Voice of Farmers, Badagry, also played a vital role in coordinating the distribution.

The agriculture sector remains a cornerstone of the local economy in Badagry. Initiatives like this are crucial to ensure sustainable development and food security in the region and Lagos State as a whole. Farmers in Badagry anticipate more support from their representatives and leaders to bolster the agricultural sector.

The event saw the presence of several prominent political and community figures, including Hon. Sedegla Pot-Balogun, Chairman of the Sesi Whingan Consiliers, Chief Avigbe Joshua, Hon. Ade Agoro, and chairpersons from farmers’ associations across all three councils in Badagry.

The fertilizer distribution forms part of a broader agricultural support program initiated by Hon. Whingan, aiming to equip farmers with essential inputs and training to enhance farming techniques and productivity, ultimately boosting food security and the local economy in Badagry.
