Bola Tinubu’s Directive to TETFund: Construction of 72 Modern Hostels by 2025

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to double the number of modern hostels in tertiary institutions from 36 to 72 by the year 2025.

The disclosure was made by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students.

According to a statement released by the Fund on Tuesday, the president’s directive to enhance hostel facilities is aimed at ensuring industrial harmony in tertiary institutions.

Mr. Echono emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable academic calendar and ensuring a conducive learning environment. He mentioned that efforts are underway to improve students’ welfare and the quality of education they receive on campus.

Echono revealed that the construction of 36 modern hostel facilities has already commenced in various tertiary institutions in 2024, with plans to increase them to 72 by 2025 following the president’s directive.

He also mentioned that TETFund has been tasked to address other challenges facing tertiary institutions, such as campus transportation and electricity supply issues.

Regarding the high electricity bills some universities face, Echono expressed concerns and stated that discussions have begun with the Ministry of Power to find solutions to reduce the burden on the institutions.

Furthermore, he highlighted the president’s directive for the immediate payment of four months’ salary arrears owed to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.
