Bola Tinubu Emphasizes the Need for Unified Efforts in Combating Insecurity

President Bola Tinubu has stressed the importance of eliminating inter-agency rivalry among law enforcement agencies in order to address the insecurity plaguing the country. He highlighted that tackling these challenges requires a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders within the security architecture. Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made these remarks during the inauguration of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja on Wednesday.

He pointed out that the security situation in the country is intricate due to threats posed by well-organised non-state actors, necessitating a unified strategy. Tinubu urged law enforcement agencies to adopt a coordinated and cooperative approach while calling for the eradication of inter-agency rivalries.

Assuring his commitment to adequately equip the police force, Tinubu mentioned plans to invest in the procurement of arms and weapons, among other measures.

He emphasized, “In line with our objective of reforming the Nigeria Police Force, we will continue to enhance the capabilities of the police through the acquisition of necessary arms, weapons, and critical equipment, as well as recruitment and continuous training to enhance the number, quality, and readiness of our police personnel.”

Regarding cybercrime, Tinubu acknowledged it as a modern form of criminal activity posing increasing threats. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to combatting all forms of criminality in the country.

He stated, “Our resolve to tackle criminal activities remains firm. Cybercrime presents a new challenge in this battle, with cybercriminals, online financial fraudsters, and cyber terrorists exploiting the internet for their disruptive activities.”

Tinubu highlighted the need for robust policies to address cyber threats amid the evolving technological landscape and the impact of events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the advancement of 5G technology.

He noted the surge in social media usage since 2020 for spreading subversive content and inciting violence, underscoring the urgency of addressing these challenges.

The President emphasized the importance of collaboration between the National Cybercrime Centre and the Office of the National Security Adviser to enhance oversight of online activities.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the achievements of the NPF-NCC in combating cybercrime within a short period. He highlighted successful interventions in responding to cyber threats targeting government and non-governmental entities, resulting in arrests and prosecution of suspects.

Egbetokun also mentioned the significant recovery of 70% of stolen funds and assets by the centre, showcasing its impact in addressing cyber-related crimes.
