Body of retired headmaster is exhumed nine days after being buried by the wrong family

The exhumation of a retired headmaster’s body, which had been buried by the wrong family due to a mortuary mix-up, has caused a stir. Undertakers mistakenly took the body of John Hetford, 89, instead of Jimmy McDonald, 90, resulting in Mr. Hetford being laid to rest by the wrong family. The error was discovered when the hospital contacted the undertakers about collecting Mr. Hetford for cremation. After Mr. Hetford was exhumed, he was cremated in Carlisle, while Mr. McDonald was subsequently buried in his home village. The North Cumbria Integrated Care Foundation NHS Trust is conducting an investigation into the incident, expressing condolences to the affected families. The funeral director also extended sympathies and acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the mistake, emphasizing their adherence to protocols and the unforeseen mix-up.
