Despite the rain, Nigerians took to the streets to protest the killing of George Floyd and to demand an end to racial injustice.
The Black Lives Matter Movement in Nigeria (BLMMN) organized the protest, with Josephine Okpara leading the march through the streets of Victoria Island, Lagos alongside other demonstrators.
They held up placards with messages such as “Black Lives Matter” and “Justice For George Floyd,” condemning the violence against African Americans in the United States.
The protest was a response to the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, when Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes during an arrest.
Josephine Okpara, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasized the need for the US to eradicate “white supremacy and establish local power to intervene in violence directed at black communities by the state and vigilantes.”
However, the protest drew criticism from Nigerians on various social media platforms, with many expressing disappointment and highlighting the need to address more urgent issues in the country.
