Big Pun faced a challenging childhood. His father passed away when he was a baby, and his mother battled with drug addiction. He was raised by his abusive stepfather and cared for by his grandmother. This environment led him to face various struggles. Expelled from high school, he was brought up on the streets of the big city. His music journey commenced in the 1990s, wherein he began crafting lyrics and eventually formed a rap group with Lyrical Assassin, Toom, and Joker Jamz. Despite this, he struggled to break into the rap scene until 1995 when he had a guest appearance on Fat Joe’s second album under the name Big Punisher.

Renaming himself as Big Pun, he started working on his first album. Connecting with producers Knobody and Sean C, the song “I’m Not A Player” was mixed, originally performed by Joe. The new track, “Still Not A Player”, recorded as a duet with its original singer, became a massive hit, propelling Pun into the rap scene and significantly contributing to his net worth.

In 1998, Big Pun’s debut album “Capital Punishment” received platinum certification. This accomplishment, the album reaching 5th place on the Billboards top 200 chart, greatly increased his net worth. Meanwhile, he joined Terror Squad, initiated by rapper Fat Joe. Terror Squad’s only album, “The Album”, released in 1999, however, did not perform well.

Unfortunately, Pun’s career abruptly ended when he suffered a fatal heart attack related to obesity on February 7, 2000.

Posthumously, two more albums were released. His second album, “Yeeeah Baby”, released in April 2000, achieved gold certification within three weeks of its release. Furthermore, a compilation album featuring some of his greatest hits, unreleased material, and guest appearances, was released in 2001.

Following his demise, a documentary titled “Big Pun: The Legacy”, directed by Vlad Yudin, was released in September 2009. The film includes interviews with celebrities and others who knew him, featuring prominent musicians from the American scene like Snoop Dogg, DJ Skribble, and Xzibit.

Big Pun achieved notable recognition in the music industry, being ranked No. 25 on the 50 Greatest MCs of All Time list by website About.com. He also secured the No. 11 spot on the list of the 22 Greatest MCs by MTV2.

In his personal life, Big Pun was married to Eliza Rios. When he passed away at the young age of 28, he left behind his spouse and their three children. Their youngest child, son Chris Rivers, followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued a career in music.
